Obituary of Jo' Muehmer


A longtime resident of Ridgetown, Joachim Kurt Muehmer passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, October 5, 2017 in his 91st year. Born in Baruth, Germany, Jo' was the son of the late Kurt and Hertha (Bunke) Muehmer. Beloved husband of 61 years to Marlies (nee Schulze). Loved Dad of Ralph and Susan Muehmer and Monica and Ken Robertson. Opa's memory will be forever cherished by grandchildren Hannah and Dan Merino, James and Kayla Muehmer, Mallory Muehmer and Mark Muehmer (Nicole Off).

Jo' is survived by his brother Volkhard and Barbel Muehmer and extended family in Germany. Educated as a Forester in Germany, Jo' had the opportunity to immigrate to Canada in the 50's where he became a proud Canadian citizen. While working as a researcher in Vineland, he received his Master's Degree at the University of Guelph. Jo' spent the remainder of his career as a dedicated and valued researcher and lecturer at the Ridgetown College, recognized internationally for his work in horticultural crops and machine harvesting tomato research. He will also be remembered for his bee-keeping passion, leadership within the horticultural society and as a supporter of a variety of charities.

He was a founding member of Emmanuel Congregational Church and will be especially missed by his church family and friends. Family will receive friend at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 76 Main Street East, Ridgetown on Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Emmanuel Congregational Church, 92 Erie Street North, Ridgetown at 12:00 pm on Monday, October 9, 2017. Cremation to follow with an interment to be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Ridgetown at a later date.
