Dear Sue and family,
First of all I like to wish you strength and a lot of courage in the time to come. Alwine and I will miss Sherry dearly. His humour but foremost the frolic twinkle in his eyes. His everlasting effort to get things done and keep informed has always been exemplar to me. I will never forget the bond we had from the first time on. He will stay my “sergeant-major”.
From the letters and photo’s we got thanks to you I saw the old soldier who was fading away. It did hurt but - to our comfort- to the last he kept that waggish smile.
It was honour and a privilege to have met him and have the bond we had. He will be in our memory forever.

I got to know Sherry over the years through my research on the Italian Campaign, specifically the young men from Chatham-Kent who were killed in action. Sherry was always helpful and shared his experience willingly and I always felt so fortunate that our community was blessed to have such a dedicated veteran, and veteran’s advocate here for us to be inspired by and learn from. Ridgetown students loved November visits and presentations from Mr. Sheridan Atkinson. They were also honoured on Remembrance Day to attend the community service and cenotaph with him, followed by lunch and a visit at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 243. He had a wonderful report with the students and was such a great ambassador for The Royal Canadian Legion, Remembrance Day and Canada.
