Douglas McLaren

Obituary of Douglas Sydney McLaren

McLAREN: Douglas Sydney -

With great sadness, the family announces the passing of Douglas Sydney McLaren at age 51, originally from Ridgetown ON. He spent much of his life in Charlotte NC, and recently lived in Wilmington NC.

Born in December 1969 in Chatham ON, cherished son of Archie (2007) and Anita McLaren. Much loved brother of Don (Linda) McLaren and Barb Denotter (Eric (2011), Scott McPherson). Loving uncle to Jim McLaren (Morgan Farquharson), Sheila McLaren, Michelle McLaren (Martin Helmer), Sarah Denotter, Christine Denotter, Maddison Harkey, and Makenna Harkey.

After graduating from Commerce at McMaster University, Doug worked for GE Plastics in Mississauga and was transferred to Charlotte NC. He later worked for UPS Freight in various capacities. In Charlotte he found another avid sports lover, Lara Harkey with whom he shared many adventures in their 15 years of marriage.

He will be dearly missed by a wide collection of friends and family, near and far. Heartfelt thanks to his core guardian angels, especially Melissa Treff, and friends of Bill.

Doug was a lover of wind therapy and rescuer of injured wildlife. He connected quickly with everyone in his path, finding commonalities to chat easily about. He was a gentle soul with deep heart strings. He loved collecting sports trivia, memorabilia and especially about his favourite band the Tragically Hip. He also loved his fur babies: Malcolm, Angus, Phoebe, and Deke among others.

Doug was interested in nearly all sports - either competing or watching. He was a hockey referee, player and HUGE Montreal Canadiens fan. Watching NHL, Curling, NFL, Formula 1, and NASCAR races were among his favourites. He was a Board member at the Charlotte Curling Association.

We are going to miss you like crazy, will cherish our special memories and are comforted that you are finally at peace.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Donations to your local Animal Rescue or your local charity of choice in Doug’s memory are greatly appreciated.
