Father Johnston was an important part of my family’s life for the many years that we lived in Ridgetown.
Unfailingly cheerful and upbeat , he was always generous with his love, his laughter and his spirit . He was an important spiritual guide to my parents - James and Cornelia Sheehy - and I know they treasured his presence in their lives . Sincere condolences to his family and his many friends . The world is a better place for him having been in it .

Fr. sam was a great guy too me . I stayed with him when he was a priest in Petrolia for a couple weeks he gave me a job taking care of the grounds and that I was only 16 years old well I’m 64 years old today and I think God for this man in my life great guy

Our hearts are heavy. What a fortunate time to be alive as to have Fr. Sam enter our lives. What a dedicated, joyful, faithful servant of the Lord. He was such an awesome example of how we need to be. Fr. Sam would drop everything to pray for people or hear confession. How we admired his time in the confessional when he traveled to Medjorgie. We were thankful to have gone with him on one visit. We will miss his cheerful laugh and the delight always in his voice. We especially will miss his beautiful blessings he would give us before we hung up the phone. He always thought of others first and loved his family dearly. He is finally at peace with our Lord and I know heaven is celebrating Fr. Sam and that little giggle of his. We will always love you Fr. Sam and we can't wait to see you again. I offer my deep condolences to the family of Father Johnston. Father Johnston became the Parish Priest when I was in Grade 8, and as a teenager and throughout my young adulthood and during my years as a religious sister, he has been both a beautiful model of faith, love of God, humility, service and joy, as well as a wonderful support to both me and my family. I am so grateful for the gift he made of himself to God and to all. He was also a beautiful model of prayerfulness to me, as I remember his chair before the Blessed Sacrament and how he was always praying there before Mass faithfully - a beautiful example to me of fidelity in his vocation as a priest. His kindness, thoughtfulness and friendship touched my family in so many ways. May he receive his eternal reward and go to meet Christ who was for him, the true source of his joy and hope. Thank you, Father Johnston. May you rest in eternal peace and joy! You will be sorely missed and remembered with love.

Fifty years ago, Fr. Sam came to our parish and changed the lives of many young people and families who attended Holy Rosary and St Philips. No one spoke about the Holy Spirit like he did. He changed my life forever by his example and for entrusting me with self confidence and a lifetime of faith that has sustained me for 50 years!
I don’t know how I could ever thank him for all that he did for me as a young person. RIP Fr Sam

Our dear Fr. Sam. What a beautiful gift he was for us. Thank you Lord for sharing Fr. with us. Our Priest our mentor our friend. Prison to Praise changed my life as he told me it would PTLA- his prayer rocks are all over our homes- we have multiple copies of all the prayer cards he gave out- Psalm 91 being a favourite-blessed Rosaries and pins from him-Holy water, salt and oil provided by Fr.-his precious little giggle-Holy Mass shared in his home (such an unbelievable feeling)-home cooked breakfast and dinner made by him!! Fresh perch dinners. The Gift of the his holy hands praying over us and the Holy Spirit moving through us and many more precious gifts. You are a true disciple Fr. Fr. Johnston was a very special priest. He brought the charismatic movement to Petrolia and Wyoming wherein many became blessed with gifts of the Holy Spirit. One of his greatest joys was with the youth - he was very proud of the New Dawn Singers who brought happiness to others through their music ministry; they even became a little famous with their stereo recording! Dear Mary and family,
God’s ways are certainly not ours! During his recent health struggle many have been praying for Fr. Sam’s healing as we looked for signs of hope in your faithful updates on your beloved Uncle. Now, PTLA! no more struggling for breath, no more frustration with an unco-operative body, now in the midst of our grief, only Joy, Joy, Joy! as you reminded us Mary.
Now we give thanks for so many years of his chaplaincy on our Medjugorje pilgrimages. Who can forget his delightful recitation of “Rindercella” breaking the monotony of long bus trips, his infectious giggle at his own jokes, his child-like delight in simple pleasures like banana splits, and most especially for me, his spiritual discipline as we encountered him in the early morning hours in the dining room, praying his Divine Office and rarely missing an opportunity to offer Holy Mass with us.
Vaya con Dios, Fr. Sam as you journey home to The Father’s House!

Fr. Sam was the last priest saying Holy Mass for us before we moved to Texas last year. He helped us discern our reasons for the move, and gave us his blessing. He was a very holy priest, and a great encouragement to us. We treasure the rosary he gave us. He encouraged so many others on their spiritual journeys as well. Father’Sam’ one of God’s good and faithful servants.
I will never forget my two trips to Colombia, especially the detour to NewYork to get a new passport for Father since he lost his, so the pilgrims went on without us; and the flight attendant changing our regular tickets to first class when boarding last minute.
So many memories of his tireless work with the poor and all the people helped through his walk with the Lord.
I am so blessed to have known him and the both of you as so many of us are on life’s journey with God.

Such a wonderful addition to God's Heavenly Kingdom. I always remember Father coming into my photo shop and asking for empty film containers for his anointing oil to take on his mission trips. We had wonderful conversations. I remember him sharing a photo of Christ crucified that appeared so real. Father Johnson was a great man and gentle man who will be greatly missed.

I was privileged to see Fr. Sam's love of the poor and generosity towards those he encountered in both Columbia and Uganda as well as the joy that he spread throughout the time he was there . He touched countless hearts in Medjugorje and yes, told everyone to "Praise the Lord anyway"

Fr. Sam was a friend for many years. Our height and build are very similar, and one day, many years ago, he asked me where I bought my pants. When I told him I bought them at Lionel's Men's Wear on King Street in Chatham, and that Lionel was a faithful Catholic, Fr. Sam went there and bought several pair of pants. Years after that, when Lionel's closed, Fr. Sam was as sad as I was. He is someone I love deeply, and miss immensely. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Fr. Sam O Lord, and Grant Eternal Rest Unto Him! May His Soul + and the Souls of all the Faithful Departed Through The Mercy of God, Rest In Peace! Amen!
